Hi everybody, as you might have heard by now Citrix announced XenApp and XenDesktop version 7.6 build on top of the their new and improved Flexcast Management Architecture. I took the liberty to summarize some, if not all, of the newly announced features and enhancements that both products will bring to the table, sparing you the marketing propaganda surrounding it. If you feel I left anything out, drop me a line and Iโ€™ll include it, and of course this goes for the Citrix employees as well :-) Here goes:

Both products are build on top of Citrix’s third generation FMA, which can be deployed on premises, in the cloud or using a combination of both which we refer to as a Hybrid architecture.

For example, when users access applications through kiosks, the application may require credentials, but the Citrix access portal and tools do not.

Database connection leasing will be introduced to replace IMAโ€™s LHC. It wonโ€™t be the same but itโ€™s a step in the right direction for sure.ย The connection leasing feature supplements the SQL Server high availability best practices by enabling users to connect and reconnect to their most recently used applications and desktops, even when the Site database is not available. Read all about it, see :

    Nice wrap up!
“Get rid off IOPS all together using Citrixโ€™s new and improved Provisioning Services 7.1 with cache in RAM and spill over to disk functionality. Will depend on License type.”
O_o, I assume this is the existing PVS7.x feature so the new part is “will depend on license type” ?

    1. Bas van Kaam Avatar

Hi Berry, actually I meant that you will only get PVS with the Enterprise and Platinum editions of both products and not with the XenDesktop VDI or XenApp Advanced editions. Perhaps I should have left this one out since nothing really changed, but that goes for some of the other mentioned features as well.

      Regards,

      Bas.

Ok Bas, thanks for the clarification!

Provisioning Services is still available in the XenDesktop VDI edition (for deploying to virtual machines) See: http://www.citrix.com/go/products/xendesktop/feature-matrix

    1. Bas van Kaam Avatar

Of-course, youโ€™re absolutely right Bart, I was aiming for the โ€˜Central image managementโ€™ feature. Thanks for your input.

Ah! luckily I have not fully setup my XenApp 7.5.. but is version 7.6 able to be downloaded / tested now?

    1. Bas van Kaam Avatar

It offers some cool additional (new) features which can make life a little easier, but if you don’t need them go with 7.5 for now and upgrade later. No, it will be available near the end of September 2014.
